Indie games are easily the foundation to many revolutionary games we play for the mechanics, story and such we see in much bigger title. Despite the lack of recognition here and there, which honestly is a bummer – as someone who does enjoy Indie games more so than ever – we got to check out a few and here are some Indie Games at Gamescom Asia 2024 that caught our attention for really good reasons.

Gamescom Asia 2024 Indie Games

My Father Lied

Indie games are great for their story and if that’s what you are looking for – My Father Lied is a pretty neat game with elements of mystery and puzzle-solving capabilities in the game which gives you the progression you need. This First-person point-and-click game intends to tell the story of Huda, who tries to figure out her father’s 20-year disappearance. We played for a good 11 minutes – and the game heavily relies on 2D and 360 images, solely because it can run on all devices – so you don’t need a demanding laptop or PC to play it.

That said, the puzzles are pretty intuitive, do test your brains and one game worth checking out.

Dive the Depths

This game went into my wishlist immediately because of the 8-bit graphics, combined with some interesting choices that have gone behind the game development. For one, every time you explore the oceans, you get a completely new map generated, which means, good luck trying to game the game. The whole premise of this game is that a diver goes into the ocean to find out some secrets – and as you do that, you will face creatures, people and adversaries. With that, you conquer the ocean and not let it take over you.

The combat and weapons in the game were absolutely unique when we played it and I have to say – despite dying twice, I sure did like the “random-ness” or “uncertainty” to keep me excited for what’s to come. There’s a demo set to come out soon, so add it to your wishlist.

Common Wealth

Developed by a Singaporean developer, Team Project Lunch – the first thing that captivated me was the “multi-lingual” sign at their booth – which immediately gave me the feeling, that this game is going to go places. This game might make you a tycoon or relive your grandparents’ past – because it explores post-colonial Southeast Asia, where the Ministry of Urban Development aims to acquire land from the citizens, to be put to better use. Sounds familiar doesn’t it?

So, throughout this journey – you will meet a bunch of interesting characters, make some choices that could either make it or break it, who deserves your help and how are you going to develop this nation, either for better or for worse. Looks like a great game to make you live the past and perhaps even understand how things worked back then as it does take a huge inspiration from history.

Another game we Wishlisted in our Steam.

Cassette Boy

This game got me good – what I thought was a 2D game, turned out to be a 3D game after all. The game heavily relies on Schrödinger’s Principle – so there are certain ways to make things appear and disappear which gave this trippy experience from the get-go. I was heavily invested in this game and you can try the demo out on Steam – but get ready for the game to defy logic and get you completely grasped by the concept of illusion. Oh, it’s a game best played with a controller – so, give it a go. Interestingly, this game is supposed to launch later this year, but they are still adding more content to it.

I am excited for this one.

Nientum Op. Zero

Finally, for those gamers out there who love their 2D games, Nientum Op. Zero, made by QueseraGames is an action game with elements like platformer, runner, RPG and Musical elements all combined. The story goes like this: Two girls in the game have lost their memories and they embark on this journey filled with sorrow and eerie emotions. But the choice you make will affect the outcome of the game. Beautiful and conceptually it does look nice – and the outcome of it is pretty good. This is another demo you can play on Steam right now.

Thanks to all the Indie studios for letting us check out their game and for the lovely conversations we had over the booth at Gamescom Asia 2024.
