One of the things that we tend to spend most of our time on – it’s the Internet. We have moved to an era where whatever and however we do, we need the internet. With that said, one of the popular things on the internet is without a doubt – content providers who bring their service into Malaysia for the users to enjoy. Malaysia Internet Exchange – short for MyIX are calling for an improvement on the Internet Laws making Malaysia an attractive country to setup.

A Word from Chiew Kok, Chairman of MyIX

During the conference, Chiew Kok, the Chairman of MyIX said that having a supportive regulatory framework in Malaysia plays a huge role in making all things Internet or IoT safe and attract foreign ISPs and CSPs to establish a stronger and better presence in the heart of Malaysia.

““When these global players set up their presence in Malaysia, it basically means that their content is brought nearer home, to provide a better experience for Malaysians in accessing these content.

However, it is not just about having high speed broadband, equally important is the accessibility to quality global content in a manner that is fair and efficient. MyIX believes that better regulatory framework is important to attract more global content providers to want to have a directly presence in Malaysia.

This means that our Internet laws need to be more liberal and clear in the area of censorship, freedom of speech and sharing of content; but at the same time, be firm in setting out the boundaries and penalties in criminal Internet activities and content such child pornography, illegal betting and such.”

He also added, “As Malaysia’s main peering hub, we hope that the Minister will prioritise the betterment of the existing regulatory framework, so that Malaysia can level up as an viable option for international content providers to operate from for ASEAN and Asia Pacific.”

At the moment, there’s more than 10 international content providers that has been and still are in Malaysia for a long while now like Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Akamai, Amazon, Alibaba, Cloudflare, Limelight, Tencent and Imperva.

A Step Up in the Infrastructures to Last 5 Years and Lower Fees

In order to encourage more members, they have invested in new high performance, high density, scalable switches at Cyberjaya and AIMS Data Center to bring better growth for the next 5 years, until 2023. This will allow higher density ports per slot and bring down the operational expenditure and get MyIX ready to offer new services to the masses.

To make things interesting, they have reduced the port fee by an average of 36% which will be implemented starting this Q2 of 2019 for both 1GBPs and 10GBPs ports.

Peering Asia 3.0

On top of all of this, MyIX is hosting an event, organized along with MyNOG – Peering Asia 3.0 this November 6-7 in Kuala Lumpur. What Peering Asia 3.0 intends to do is that – they are encouraging and promoting peering and interconnection in the region by connecting Network Service Providers, Internet Exchange Providers, Data Centres and so much more. They are supported by APIX – an association of Internet Exchange Points in the Asia Pacific Region.
