Sony Electronics Inc. today launched the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II, the 67th lens in its mirrorless E-mount portfolio (model SEL2470GM2). Sony created the world’s lightest F2.8 standard zoom lens by leveraging its outstanding lens technology to produce the superb quality and gorgeous bokeh that Sony’s “G Master” series is recognised for.

The FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II is one of the line’s most flexible lenses, designed for photographers, videographers, and hybrid content creators.

Even with the aperture wide open, the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II has high resolution across the frame. Five aspherical components, including two high-precision XA (extremely aspherical) elements, are used in a fully rebuilt optical path.

Two ED (extra-low dispersion) and two Super ED glass elements are also included in the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II. The lens successfully controls chromatic aberration, astigmatism, distortion, and coma when combined with a revolutionary floating focus mechanism, resulting in superb resolution across the image area at all zoom and aperture settings.

Even in low-light situations, the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II produces superb clarity by successfully suppressing flare and ghosting. This is due to Sony’s proprietary Nano AR Coating II, which creates a consistent anti-reflective coating on the lens surface.

With its superior optical design and a newly built 11-blade aperture unit, the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II delivers superb bokeh throughout the zoom range, with lovely and almost perfectly circular bokeh.

This lens gives superb close-up performance in this new 24-70 mm design, with a minimum focusing distance of 8.25 inches (0.21 metres) at 24 mm and 12 inches (0.30 metres) at 70 mm, and a maximum magnification of 0.32x.

The FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II achieves consistent focus by employing four original Sony XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors, a floating focus mechanism, and enhanced lens control – even while photographing a fast-moving subject.

Furthermore, the lens offers continuous shooting at up to 30 frames per second for stills and 4K 120p video recording with autofocus.

The FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II has complete AF tracking capability even while shooting stills with the aperture set down, allowing for greater depth of field to ensure that moving subjects remain sharply focused when shooting continuously. The AF tracking capability of the lens while zooming is roughly twice as good as the previous model.

Because of the XD Linear Motors and a newly built aperture unit, the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II has incredibly silent AF operation. The FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II uses cutting-edge lens technology to eliminate focus breathing, focus shift, and axial shift while zooming for smooth video shooting.

This lens also works with the breathing adjustment feature found in compatible Alpha series cameras.

The newest lens also has Linear Response MF (manual focus), which enables great repeatability when focusing manually as the focus ring responds instantly and repeatedly to subtle control.

It also incorporates an aperture ring for quick, direct, and easy manual aperture/iris control. The dedicated iris ring allows for click-free control of depth of field transitions.

The FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II is designed to work flawlessly with Sony’s compact Alpha system E-mount cameras, and it is the world’s smallest and lightest1 24-70mm F2.8 zoom in its class, providing exceptional shooting versatility and freedom in a variety of scenarios.
