Twitter has just announced that they are tweaking their privacy policy with a few new additions. Some of these include a rewritten privacy policy, Twitter Data Dash and new privacy icons. What do these changes mean? Read on to find out.

Changes to Twitter’s privacy policy

Rewritten privacy policy

The first of the changes made is that the existing privacy policy has now been rewritten so that it can be easier to understand for the layman. Twitter made a conscious effort to do this as they want to ensure that their privacy policy doesn’t come down as too technical and can be easily accessible by the general public.

The changes Twitter made include:

  • A rewritten tone to the social media’s privacy policy with less “legalese” and more easily understood language.
  • A new organisation of their privacy policy into three primary sections: data collection, data use, and data sharing.
  • An expanded scope of reference to content on Twitter beyond just Tweets, accounting for the increasingly rich media found on Twitter.
  • A clearer explanation of how Twitter personalise users’ experience with the social platform and the ads users see.

The platform also made some tweaks on its privacy policy site allowing for easier access to answers to questions regarding data collection and how that data is used.

Twitter Data Dash

The social media platform also introduced the new Twitter Data Dash video game. The game is an interactive way for users to go through some of the more complicated topics when it comes to Twitter’s privacy policy.

“Transparency is core to our approach and we want to help you understand the information we collect, how it’s used, and the controls at your disposal. We hope Twitter Data Dash introduces a fun and interactive way to learn about a topic that has historically been anything but,” stated the social media platform in a recent press release.

New privacy iconography

Twitter is working on new privacy iconography – visual icons that convey essential security and privacy settings across the site.

They discovered through research and interactions with stakeholders that users who have used or seen the social media platform’s privacy settings feel more in control of their privacy on Twitter, and that there was more Twitter could do to make settings and controls easier to comprehend.

The new privacy policy, revamped site, and Twitter Data Dash are now available in nine languages: English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Russian.
