Garmin has released a new round of smartwatch software updates. The enhancements, which are supported by Garmin’s proprietary Health Science data, contribute to an improved health monitoring experience by enhancing its safety features, sports activity profiles, and overall usability.

What’s new with the latest Garmin software updates?

Health Monitoring Enhancements

This includes improved on-device sleep detection and sleep staging, a new combined restlessness score and a graph. There’s also the new Intensity Minutes widget for users to gauge their intensity minutes each day.

The update also brings a new Breathwork Activity and Respiration widget, an update to the Garmin smartwatches’ Body Battery Algorithm and a new  Fitness Age display.

Safety Feature Improvements

The Incident Detection recognition has been updated across different activities including Walking, Hiking and generic use. This update is available in select models only. Users may also simply exchange a message with their current location with pre-selected contacts, or choose an emergency contact so that in the event of an emergency, your watch can instantly aid call for help.

Expanded Sports Activities List

New sports activities have been added which include Horseback Riding, Tennis and Jump Rope across selected models. The update also adds enhanced algorithms to improve detection for stops during activities and added Run/Walk/Standing detection.

Green Contours support to Golf activity has also been added as well as an updated Up Ahead feature to support imported GPX files for Garmin smartwatches.

 User Interface Improvements

Post-activity metrics have been added including Acclimation, Pace, Detailed Speed, Bouldering metrics, Strength metrics and Indoor Climbing metrics across corresponding activities.

Users can update their Garmin smartwatches using these simple steps.

  1. Download the Garmin Express App on your PC or laptop (on Mac or Windows).
  2. Connect your smartwatch to your device using the charging USB cable.
  3. Sign in to your Garmin Connect Account and follow the steps from the App.
  4. Upon seeing your smartwatch and its serial number, you directly install any software updates available for the watch.
  5. Upon completion, disconnect the smartwatch from your device and restart your respective smartwatch for immediate access to the upgraded features.
