#ShopeeGivesBack, Shopee’s long-term community project, has generated RM2.9 million through fundraising efforts with over 40 Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) over the course of two years to assist impoverished Malaysians in times of need.

#ShopeeGivesBack raises RM2.9 million for underprivileged Malaysians

#ShopeeGivesBack, which debuted on 1 May 2020 amid the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, leverages technology to assist Malaysia’s underserved in four areas: underprivileged community development, children and family services, health charities, and environmental charities.

Malaysians can use the site to support their favourite causes in the most convenient way possible. Shopee guarantees that these non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have verifiable track records and are registered with the Registry of Societies.

RM2.1 million was raised through always-on platform donations as customers browsed on a daily basis and made informed decisions about which charities to support via the dedicated #ShopeeGivesBack webpage. B40 and community aid NGOs such as Pertubuhan Kasih Neelofa, Islamic Relief Malaysia, and Pusat Jagaan Nurul Jannah received 56% of donations received through this method.

MERCY Malaysia, which provides medical kits and mobile clinics during floods, received 20% of the donations contributed. 14% of the donations went to partners like UNICEF Malaysia to help address the critical needs of marginalised children and their families in Covid-19. In comparison, 10% went to environmental organisations like Zoo Negara, where the money helped with the animals’ annual food, enrichment, and veterinary care.

Zoo Negara ticket sales, for example, raised over RM400,000 for animal welfare. At the same time, over RM200,000 in flood relief funds (including an RM100,000 matching contribution from Shopee) helped 1,300 families rebuild their lives following recent floods in Kedah, Kelantan, Selangor, Pahang, Terengganu, Johor, and Negeri Sembilan.

Longer-term partner NGOs include Pertubuhan Kasih Neelofa, Islamic Relief Malaysia, and Pusat Jagaan Nurul Jannah. These three non-governmental organisations raised over RM400,000 in food aid, basic necessities, and housekeeping supplies for B40 families and households in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Perak, Kedah, Sabah, and Sarawak.
