Microsoft Aptos Typeface
Every generation, Microsoft spruces up their typeface with something new which has left some iconic mark on everyone’s user experience. Calibri reigned as their default font for 15 years and since 2021, they have been looking for something new and exciting. After commissioning 5 new fonts: Bierstadt, Grandview, Seaford, Skeena and Tenorite – they have settled for Bierstadt, which is now known as Aptos.
Microsoft Aptos Typeface
Aptos Typeface was created by Steve Matteson who was also a part of the OG Windows TrueType core fonts and created Segoe. That said, Aptos was designed with the idea of getting back to where it all began, with pencil and paper. So, by drawing the letters by hand, Steve created the Aptos Typeface with a slight humanist touch. It gets a little deep with the design as he wanted to have the same universal appeal of the late NPR newscaster Carl Kasell and shares a tone of Stephen Colbert, famously known for The Late Show.
Aptos remains to be a sans serif – which means it has simple letterforms and strokes, therefore making it a lot more readable. The letters are a lot more bold, well-defined, directive and constrained with clean-cut stem ends and subtle circular squares with the letters’ contours which gives better legibility at minuscule font sizes. With that said, the font carries a professional finish and still catches the attention of many.
That said, the new Aptos Typeface is already replacing Calibri on Microsoft 365, and eventually it will be making its way into every other Microsoft application. Because personally, I do enjoy the new typeface. By the way, Calibri isn’t going anywhere, as it will still be available as an option from the drop-down menu, just like how you can choose Times New Roman and Arial.
