This time around ASUS has unveiled their new ROG Phone 8 a lot earlier than anticipated – and made its debut at CES 2024. Since 8 is a pretty auspicious number, this phone hits that spot by being the premium gaming smartphone in the entire segment. That said, here’s everything we know about the ROG Phone 8 – and it’s coming to Malaysia at the end of this month.
ROG Phone 8 CES 2024
New Design and IP68
The ROG Phone 8 finally gets a major overhaul in this body design and time to bid farewell to the 7 generations which we all know by the back of our hands. This time, it gets sleeker, and sexier and has all the accoutrements of that an ROG Phone should offer. It’s 15% thinner and weighs 225 grams. It comes in two colours: Phantom Black and Silver (the latter happens to be my favourite). The Pro only comes in this Phantom Black finish.
For the first time, the ROG Phone 8 gets IP68 protection – so time to game underwater, if you can that is.
On the front, we get a completely different display layout – for the first time, the entire front is covered by a 6.78”165Hz AMOLED Display with 2500-nits peak brightness and LTPO-based adaptive refresh. If the touch sampling rate matters to you, then its at an ultra-smooth 720 Hz. This brings the question of if we lost the epic Stereo speakers – it’s a Yes and no.
It has some repositioned drivers to still emulate the “stereo” effect.
For the first time, in a long time, ROG finally focused on making the cameras better – where it now has a 50MP f/1.9 6-axis Hybrid Gimbal Stabilizer (which might be similar to what LG had), 13MP f/2.2 Ultrawide and a 32 MP f/2.4 telephoto with 3X Optical Zoom and OIS. There are some AI-based features that improve your images and recording – but this is something we can only confirm when we have it in our hands.
Age of AI
The ROG Phone 8 steps into the Artificial Intelligence realm with new features that can be used via its software like the X-Sense, X Capture, AI Grabber for Gaming, Noise Cancellation, AI Wallpaper and Semantic Search for Lifestyle.
Only on the ROG Phone 8 Pro and Pro Edition…
… you will get the AniMe Vision display, inspired by their ROG Zephyrus G Laptop with the AniMe Matrix – so, your phone can be customized however you want it. The Mini LED display is only available in ROG Phone 8 Pro and Pro Edition models. It measures 11mm by 31mm which is pretty decent sized.
As for the rest…
The ROG Phone 8 Series comes with a 5500mAh battery with 65W HyperCharge support and for the first time, it supports 15W Qi-Wireless Charging which is about darn time. Under the hood, you get the prowess of the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 paired with 8533 Mbps LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage. The configuration made available will be (RAM/Storage): 12 GB + 256 GB, 16 GB + 512 GB and 24 GB +1 TB.
ROG Phone 8 Malaysia Launch
The ROG Phone 8 Malaysia Launch is imminent as it is happening on the 30th of January 2024 – So, get your wallets ready to upgrade your phones and to quite possibly a magnificent one at that.
