Volvo Malaysia has been making great strides in the automotive industry lately and we see many EVs and other cars they make on the road more than ever. That said, the Volvo EX30 launching today is a fun-sized car which threads a similar profile as the Smart #1, #3 and such. But make no mistake, the Scandinavian automotive brand has revamped what an EV can be from the ground up. Ikea fanboys and girls, you are going to love it.
Volvo EX30 Malaysia

The Volvo EX30 is an EV from the ground up with three models for you to choose from. Aside from the global variants, Malaysia appears to get a slightly tweaked variants in certain aspects of it. Simply put, all the three models features big batteries, but there will be motor variations and some safety and luxury features exclusion with the entry level model. The car hits 0-100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. The battery gives you range of upto 476 km and with DC fast-charging, you can hit 10-80% in just 28 minutes.
Now let us give you the quick gist of the specs variation:
- EX30 Plus and Ultra: Single motor, 476km range, 5.3s (0-100km/s), 272 PS and 343 Nm
- EX30 Ultra Twin Performance: Twin motor, 450km, 3.6 (0-100km/h), 428 PS and 543 Nm
The best part about the Volvo EX30 isn’t just the performance aspect of it but it’s the whole finish inside and out feels, very minimal and cleaner than one can expect. To put it simply, if you love IKEA, this car is probably up your alley.

Inside the car, the clean finish makes the car feel rather empty as they are going for a unified 12.3” display. So, there’s only one display that shows everything, with no instrument cluster on the dashboard behind the wheels. The steering has physical buttons, which is a relief like the other Volvo cars. Speaking of the unified centre console display, it’s supposed to be simple, more customizable and intuitive. With built-in Google and support for CarPlay, it should be easier to keep things connected. The infotainment system is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon Cockpit Platform.

There’s nothing on the door trims the controls are beside the armrest and the gear selector is beside the steering wheel. They are going for a completely different experience, for one it now has a soundbar for audio – by Harman Kardon with 9 high-performance speakers. The car features ambient lighting, giving Scandinavian ambient themes based on the skies and landscape. It is pretty beautiful to look at.
As for the rest of the interior, the car uses patterned 3D knit upholstery, particle decor and textile inlay mats, completely made out of recycled materials. The interior comes in 4 flavours: Breeze, Mist, Pine and Indigo. (Pine and Breeze happens to be my personal favourite).
As for the Malaysian Variants
The EX30 regardless of the variants will feature LED headlights, 19” Diamond Cut alloy wheels, Pilot Assist, Harman Kardon Premium Sound, Power Tailgate, Frameless auto-dimming mirrors, Ambient Interior themes and Safe Space Technology. However, the following features we are going to talk about is only available in the Ultra and Ultra Twin Performance: Park Pilot Assist, 360-degree Camera, Powered Front Seats and Panoramic Sunroof.
