The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 from last year gets a new moniker added to the name and its now the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra now. But because it touts the new Ultra name tag, doesn’t automatically makes it an ultra. In fact it still has a lot of the same things with granular improvements from last year.

The Improvement in Hinge and Display Reinforcements
One of the big changes that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra underwent is the newly reinforced display that you will find when you unfold it. This new display now features a Flex Titanium Technology where the display has a Titanium Alloy film to help with the repeated folding and the Titanium Plate adds an additional reinforcement to keep the phone flat and stable.
The new hinge and the magnetic power optimization helps with the phone opening and closing which is something we did try at the preview. But it wasn’t the hinge that made a difference, it was the new curvature that helps with the opening and closing the device easier that made a world of a difference. This change is in effect on both the Ultra and the non-Ultra Z Fold 8 that made its debut this year for the first time.
Mostly the Same with Minor Tweaks
As for the hardware, the phone still has the same hardware as the Z Fold 7, though there are minor but thoughtful improvements.
- The Battery is now at 5000mAh, compared to the 4400mAh
- The inner display hits 3000 nits peak brightness, compared to the 2600 nits
- While it retains the same 200MP Main and 10MP 3x Telephoto, the Ultrawide camera has been bumped to 50MP instead.
- The charging speed is capped at 45W wired and 20W Wirelessly.
The Z Fold 7 is still a great buy over the Z Fold 8 Ultra
Despite the minor improvements, the Z Fold 8 Ultra shares a lot of traits with the Z Fold 7, which brings me to the point that you are better off purchasing the Z Fold 7 if you want a foldable at a heavily discounted price point. Otherwise, the Z Fold 8 Ultra pretty much feels the same and there’s nothing huge to rave about.
Afterall most of the AI features will make its way down to other Samsung phones anyway, so you are pretty much safe and good to go. But the Fold that consumers should consider would be the non-Ultra Z Fold 8 as the new dimensions really puts the phone in a much desirable spot for many, myself included.
