The Grammys has just announced recently on their website that they will be expanding their categories for the Grammy Awards. One of these new categories includes one for the year’s best video game music.

Grammys add a new video game music category

Officially named ‘Best Score Soundtrack For Video Games And Other Interactive Media‘, the new category will officially begin starting from the 2023 Grammy Awards.

According to the Grammys, the award “Recognizes excellence in score soundtrack albums comprised predominately of original scores and created specifically for, or as a companion to, a current video game or other interactive media released within the qualification period.”

It’s about time that the Recording Academy recognises video game music as there has been fantastic music produced for video games through the years. A few that come to mind are music the Halo series, the Zelda series, the Mass Effect series and many more. I myself regularly listen to music from some of my favourite games including Persona 5 Royal.

“We’re so excited to honor these diverse communities of music creators through the newly established awards and amendments, and to continue cultivating an environment that inspires change, progress and collaboration,” said Harvey Mason Jr., the Recording Academy CEO.

Apart from the video game music category, the Grammys also included new categories for Songwriter Of The Year, Best Alternative Music Performance, Best Americana Performance and Best Spoken Word Poetry Album. I’m particularly happy for the best songwriter category as there’ve been many songs that the songwriters don’t get enough credit for.
