TM Roh, President and Head of Samsung Electronics’ MX (Mobile eXperience) Business, voiced confidence in the continued popularity of foldable smartphones during a recent visit to Indonesia. He spoke on the mobile business in Southeast Asia and the importance of technology in defining the future, in addition to examining developments in the mobile market.

Samsung plans to take foldable further

Roh said that Samsung will continue to develop the unique advantages of the Galaxy foldables, such as viewing on a large screen using a compact and durable device, taking photos and videos in Flex mode, multitasking on split screens with an S Pen and enjoying a unique user experience with the new foldable form factor.

We will also enhance the foldables experience through partnerships with industry leaders, such as Google, to support more applications and services for foldable devices,” he added.

Foldable form factors are predicted to remain popular. The global sales volume of foldable smartphones increased more than fourfold from 2020 to 2021, exceeding the market growth prediction by threefold. The success of the Galaxy Z series demonstrates the growing demand for foldable smartphones, with sales of the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G and Z Flip3 5G in a single month topping total foldable phone sales in 2020.

Roh also touched on 5G connectivity and how it relates to Samsung devices in the future. He explains that even though 5G is still limited in the region, he is committed to ensuring that users in the region will benefit from 5G connectivity when it becomes available. He also says that he’s confident Samsung devices will be the region’s no 1 5G devices of choice.

With Samsung’s Galaxy ecosystem, which revolves around the Galaxy smartphones as its hub, 5G technology is a major facilitator of an integrated mobile experience. The ecosystem delivers seamless experiences between the smartphone and multiple devices, such as the Galaxy Watch and Buds series, and even a PC-like experience with Galaxy tablets via Samsung Dex.

He also emphasised the region’s variety, which includes growing regions where mid-tier handsets remain essential drivers for Samsung.

“By having a keen understanding of our target consumers’ needs, we are able to maintain the affordability of our mid-tier smartphones while providing a great mobile experience as we focus on strengthening specifications of priority product features, such as the battery, memory, performance, and 5G capabilities,” he said.

In addition, various features from the flagship smartphones, such as the enhanced cameras, and dustproof and water resistant, are extended to the Galaxy A series.”

Samsung is also utilising technology and channelling it towards a more positive light with its Galaxy for the Planet commitment. The company also emphasised sustainability at the centre of its innovations. This includes Generation17, a partnership between the company and the United Nations Development Programme that uses technology to advance and improve humanity.
