We are at the cusp of another A series for 2024 and Samsung Malaysia has finally dropped the new A Series at our doorstep. Before we publish the review, here’s our Samsung Galaxy A55 first look and I must say that this A Series feels so much better than the Fan Edition.

Samsung Galaxy A55 First Look

It looks and feels better than their Fan Edition

The Samsung Galaxy A55 has some interesting refinements in the design and build department. For one, the first improvement in the design happens to be the metal frame, with a brushed accent on it that does look beautiful. We received the Awesome Lilac colour, and I am a fan of this colour. They do offer it in other colours: Blue and Yellow which looks equally eye-catching. On the back of the A55, we noticed that the glass has a nice iridescent reflection, and I can’t quite say that it’s giving the “holo” look, it sure is something similar to it.

1/4

The fact that Samsung has put so much thought into getting the Samsung Galaxy A55, makes me laugh a little as it looks and even feels much better than the Fan Edition we reviewed a while ago. If the upcoming Fan Edition were to step in the same direction, then, I would be more excited to see what Samsung has to offer in the future. But other than that, you do get IP67 – which is great and not being gate-kept just for the flagships.

There are some Hardware Improvements

We mentioned in our other article and addressed the improvements we can expect with the Samsung Galaxy A55 and the A35 – which you can click here to read. But to keep things simple, here are the improvements:

  • For one, we do get a newer processor with the Samsung Galaxy A55, and it’s the new Exynos 1480 with 12GB RAM and 256GB Internal storage which can be expanded with the help of a MicroSD Card
  • The cameras, well, on the back, it has two functional ones: a 12MP Ultrawide f/2.2 and 50MP f/1.8. It does have a third camera which is a 5MP Macro, but it doesn’t matter to us as it offers the least amount of functionality.
  • As for the rest, we have a nice 6.6” 120Hz Super AMOLED FHD+ Display and a 5000mAh battery.

Knox Vault: the first time ever, in an A Series

Every year, Samsung includes something new with the Galaxy A Series. We all know that “Awesome Screen, Awesome Camera, Long Lasting Battery Life” jingle – but other than that, this year, we get Knox Vault – which has never made it out of the flagship series until this A55 and A35. Now, while it may not seem like a lot, it is a huge deal in more ways than one. With their security protocol, you can pretty much protect yourself and hey, it can be a great choice of phone for your parents, elderlies and even kids – where the native security is impressive enough to protect you from almost all sorts of compromises.

We are going to do an entire article on this – you can stay tuned to us for that.

Any Setbacks?

So far it’s a little early to tell but from playing the phone for about a day or two since we got it, we noticed that the phone’s performance is more mid-tier geared. Think of it as a Snapdragon 6 Series equivalent. We tried running some games, like Honkai Star Rail which just straight-up crashed and other less demanding games worked alright. It isn’t a setback for now but we can see that the phone is giving us an idea on what it is going to be. We will dive into this more in our review.
