MTG Duskmourn: House of Horror is the latest set that’s releasing soon, themed around the horror theme, with some fun references to Ghostbusters and some classic horrors, like Saw and The Shining. Here’s everything you need to know about this set.

MTG Duskmourn | ICYMI

MTG Duskmourn Lands

The set introduces a set of new type of check land, that says “Enters tapped unless a player has 13 or less life”, which is fairly interesting. Although not terribly impactful in the Commander format, it is good in Standard, where getting down to 13 life is much easier. Then there is also a new set of dual lands that add 1 colour, but only add the second colour if the condition is met; for example, “Activate only if you control a Swamp or a Mountain”, and these lands in particular have extended art variants.

Then there is a new Enchantment Land, Valgavoth’s Lair, and although it enters tapped, it allows players to select the colour it will tap for. The full art basic lands this time around are also stunning and gorgeous, featuring Valgavoth in the background as heroes navigate through the Duskmourn plane, coming in both a non-foil and foil variant.

MTG Duskmourn Card Treatment

Just like every set, Duskmourn features unique card treatments that’s on theme with the set. Duskmourn pays homage to iconic retro horror with the Paranormal Frame cards, which come in foil and non-foil versions. There Mirror Monster cards that is a borderless art showcase with a frightening monster’s reflection. On top of that is 15 cards from the set come with a Lurking Evil variant that has a monster hiding in the card art for two unique looks.

But that’s not all, Duskmourn isn’t done yet. Introducing double exposure cards, these special showcase cards are reminiscent of classic horror photography that come with textured foil versions that are available only in Collector Boosters. Last but not least, is the special Japanese showcase included in the set, featuring Silent Hill creature designer Masahiro Ito’s art for Damnation in the Duskmourn Special Guest slot.

MTG Duskmourn Mechanics

Duskmourn introduces 6 new mechanics and bringing back 1 keyword from Shadows Over Innistrad. Returning from Innistrad is Delirium, a keyword that grants an improved effect when the player has four or more different card types in their graveyard. The Room cards are new type of enchantment that has two sides. Player can choose which side they want to cast and the other side will be locked, but can later be unlocked by paying the mana cost for its effects.

Eerie is a new mechanic that works together with the new Room cards, triggering whenever an enchantment enters the battlefield or when the second door of a room card is unlocked. This new keyword will benefit decks that are built around enchantment cards.

Manifest takes on a new form in this set as Manifest Dread, which is not entirely different from the original mechanic. When a player manifests dread, they look at the top two cards of their library and selects one to face down as a 2/2 colourless creature, and the other goes to the graveyard. Players can only flip the manifested card face up at any time, so long as it is a creature card, by paying its mana cost.

Do you like Suspend mechanic? If so, you’re going to like Impending, the Duskmourn take on time counters. By paying the impending cost written on the card, the permanent enters the battlefield as a non-creature with a set number of time counters that will be gradually removed at the end of each turn. Unlike suspend, the card with impending can be removed with Beast Within or Generous Gift as it is still a permanent on the board.

Cards with the keyword Survival will trigger a unique ability if it lives to the end of the combat phase tapped. Lastly is Glimmer, a new enchantment creature type. When a creature with the glimmer keyword dies, it will be returned to the battlefield as an enchantment instead, maintaining its secondary effect, but it will lose the creature subtype.

All of these mechanics can be found through cards obtained via Play Boosters, Collector Boosters and even Commander Decks – where the latter brings back Archenemy, which is now improved for multiplayer setup. You can read about that here.
